Everything you need to know about going solar

A typical 4kWp system costs around £5,500 including installation - and with the 0% VAT incentive through 2027, you're saving over £1,000 compared to VAT rates. System sizes range from 2kWp (smaller home) to 10kWp (larger detached), so costs scale accordingly. The good news: prices have dropped 50% over the past decade while efficiency has improved.

The SEG is a government-backed scheme that requires energy suppliers to pay you for any solar electricity you export to the grid. Current rates average 15p/kWh, though some suppliers offer up to 20p/kWh. If you generate more than you use (common in summer), you get paid. It's essentially passive income from your roof.

Most roofs are suitable for solar. South-facing is ideal, but east/west-facing roofs work well too (generating about 85% of a south-facing system). North-facing roofs are generally not recommended. We'll assess your roof's angle, shading, and structural suitability during the free survey - no guesswork involved.

A typical residential installation takes 1-2 days. This includes scaffolding, mounting the panels, wiring to your consumer unit, and setting up the inverter. Most homeowners are generating their own electricity within 48 hours of the installation team arriving.

Solar panels add value to your property - studies show homes with solar sell faster and for up to 4% more than comparable properties without. The new owners inherit the system (and the savings), which makes it a selling point. All warranties transfer to the new owner.

In most cases, no. Solar panels on residential properties are considered "permitted development" and don't require planning permission. Exceptions include listed buildings, conservation areas, and panels that protrude significantly from the roof. Our surveyor will advise if your property needs special consideration.

All installations through our network come with comprehensive warranties: 25-year performance guarantee on the panels (guaranteeing at least 80% efficiency), 10-year warranty on the inverter, and a 10-year workmanship warranty on installation work. You're covered for the long term.

Savings depend on your electricity usage, system size, and roof orientation. A typical 4kWp system in South East England generates around 3,800 kWh/year. With self-consumption of 30% and export payments on the rest, most homeowners save £400-800 per year. Use our calculator above for a personalised estimate.
